Northern Kentucky Water District Water Quality and Production Safety Programs
RMP - RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires certain companies, like ours to develop and share information about the chemicals we use, the potential risk those chemicals pose to the community, the ways we manage those risk, and in the unlikely event of a release how well we are prepared to respond.

Within this program the Water District has increased the training of Water Quality employees. The employees have been trained in hazardous materials. The Haz Wopper classes were taught to everyone from Secretary's, Lab, Operations, Pumping, Instrumentation, Maintenance and Projects. Classes taught were the Awareness Level (8 hour training), the Operational Level (16 hour training ) and the Technician Level (40 hour training) that taught the personnel on call how to clean up chemical spills.

The Water District has chosen to switch from chlorine to sodium hypochlorite 12.5% solution. This will allow our company to lesson the hazards associated with chlorine. So far, the District has converted all locations that used chlorine in the Kenton County area to sodium hypochlorite. The conversion to sodium hypochlorite in Campbell County at the filtration plant should be completed by September of 2000.
